Confused about Movies in PowerPoint

I've inserted a mpg file into a powerpoint slide. It doesn't play either
automatically or with a click when I enter the slide the first time. But if
I go back to the previous slide, then re-enter the slide with the mpg file,
it works fine. I've heard that others have experienced the same problem.

Standard questions.

What version of Windows?
What version of PPT?
What version of Mpeg (1 or 2)
What codec is being used?
Does the file contain DRM?

Windows XP Professional
PowerPoint 2003 SP1
MPEG2
How do I find out what codec is being used? (Works fine with Windows media
player)
What is DRM and how would I know?

I went back and re-read your first post and you indicate it plays in PPT on
the second entrance (going back) into the slide. I can think of no reason
for this to be honest. Usually it takes some effort to fire a slides media
or animations on the second entrance.

My best gustimation is that your file (presentation) may have become
corrupted. I suggest open a new, blank presentation and then inserting the
slides one at a time from the existing presentation. This will normally
clear out the corruption (or won't allow the slide to be inserted and you
know where the problem is).
