MS 2003: Table at 100% does not resize properly

I've never had this happen before.

A table with Table Properties>Preferred width... set to 100% in a single
column (7") page does not reset to 100% of the column width when the page
format is changed to two columns (2" and 5").

Instead the table displays as slightly more than half of the 5" column
(approximately 3"), although Table Properties>Preferred width... still says
100%.

Any ideas?
