MS - Excel read only

I'm having trouble opening excel and word files. I was told in another
newsgroup that it's improperly registered. I went through the steps to
register the office 2007 I installed on several computers, only one of which
doesn't get the message "read only"

No, it needs to be "Activated", "registration" is purely optional for
marketing purposes.
