MS Image Composer vs. MS Photo Editor

T

Tom Miller

I finally go it through my head that the Microsoft Image Composer was
bundled with FP97/2000 and then replaced by the Microsoft Photo Editor for
FP2002/XP Office.

Did the Image Composer have any functionality that the Photo Editor lacks?

IC was mainly designed to create graphic/image for the web, whereas Photo Editor was create for
Office users to work with Photos.

IC was really replaced by PhotoDraw.

Thank you. It looks like PhotoDraw has been discontinued also.

I'm still using I.C. now, but in conjunction with Adobe Photoshop Elements
5.0 as PS has more saving options than IC does when saving raw images to
Jpegs and Gif formats

I.C. works well in Vista Ultimate, considering it was written in the days of
Windows 98/ME and came with Frontpage 98.

I am suprised it worked at all given the feedback from various sources and
newsgroups about incompatibility of (old) software with Vista.

Andrew,
I talked to someone who might have a copy of IC. He said that there was a
problem with a .dll file that had a huge security hole allowing a system to
be taken over... which might be another reason it has gone away.

Does anyone have a suggestion that is less expensive than
Photoshop/Fireworks and uses an office-like interface?

May be OT and certainly isn't an answer but have you looked at:
Chris, for me its not OT because some kind of image editor is one of the
things I need to get/learn. While I qualify (if its still available) for
the Expressions web development product upgrade, I don't think I have $400
for an image editor.... I do have the MX version of Fireworks so I may just
suffer with trying to learn it....

There's no suffering in Fireworks (of virtually any vintage). :)
If you're a student you can get the entire suite free:

I kind of remember installing a (MS Graphic / Office) update that took care of that issue at the
time.
