The cd should specify whether its an upgrade edition. If it is you need to
find a qualifying app to upgrade from, it doesnt have to be installed, you
just need the 'old' cd to point to during the process.
PS You did uninstall any trial edition on your Laptop?
You dont register the software, you Activate it, either online or via phone

I just purchased a new laptop and want to install MS Office 2003 which is
currently installed on my old PC. I purchased the software from a national
retailer. After I put in the Product Key, I am asked where is the earlier
version(97, 2000, etc) for this upgrade. I am pretty sure this is a full
version. How do I get around this? I am throwing away the old computer.

How do I go about registering this software on my new computer? I am
heading out of town this week and desperately need excel for a class. Any
help will be greatly appreciated.
