MS Office Critical Update KB828041

K

KennyE

I tried to update my two PCs using the office update
site. The site recognised that both PCs needed this
update so I tried to install it. However, both PCs came
up saying that the install was unsuccessful. Both PCs
have Windows XP Pro and Office Student & Teacher Edition
2003. Both are also running Norton AV 2004. Grateful
for advice on how I can overcome this. Cheers

Ken, I have the exact same situation--with exactelly the
same conditions. Because both the problem and the
environments are the same, it is most likley a software
related issue. If it happend to the two of us, it's most
likley happening to others and I would expect Microsoft
to make the corrections with a new "revised" update--at
least I hope that's the case!

I'm having this problem as well (XP Pro SP1+all updates, Office 2003
Standard Upgrade). I disabled NAV, and Office Update goes through the
motions of downloading etc., but then it reports Installation Unsuccessful.

Where would that be, or what would the filename be? A search for KB828041
turns up nothing.

Thanks,
Gary

Same behavior for me. Office 2003 Student and Teacher Edition with WinXP
Home. I had to download the individual file from the site and it worked but
wouldn't work through Office Update.

I am running Windows Me / Office 97. The Security Bulletin saysOffice 97 Service Packs 1,2,&2B must be installed for tyhe updates to work. I tried to install it and it failed. I was directed to the knowledge base and received the following instructions. They also failed.

Close Unnecessary Memory-Resident Programs
Programs that run in the background in memory are called terminate-and- stay-resident programs (TSRs). For example, these programs may be virus protection software, utility programs, print manager programs, or screen savers.
If Your Operating System Is Microsoft Windows 98 or Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition (Me)
Quit all unnecessary programs that are running before you install the Office 97 SR-1 Patch. To do this, follow these steps:
Click Start, and then click Run.
Type msconfig in the Open box and then click OK.
Click Selective startup on the General tab of the System Configuration Utility dialog box. Clear the following check boxes under Selective Startup:

Process Config.sys file
Process Autoexec.bat file
Process Winstart.bat file
Process System.ini file
Process Win.ini file
Load startup group items

NOTE: One or more of these check boxes may not be available, depending on the files present on your computer.
If your operating system is Windows Me, click the Startup folder tab so that it is in front, and then click to select *StateMgr.
Click OK.
Click Yes when you are prompted to restart your computer.
Install the Office 97 SR-1 Patch.
Click Start, and then click Run.
Type msconfig in the Open box and then click OK.
Click Normal startup on the General tab of the System Configuration Utility dialog box.
Click OK.
Click Yes when you are prompted to restart your computer.

Any suggestions?
