MS Office File Signature

I would like to know how we can make the distinction between Word ,
Excel, PowerPoint file , by just looking at the header of the file.
We have a problem in our organization where all our documents no longer
have extension. To use them we have to restore the extension , but it
could be .DOC, .XLS or .PPT or .MSI etc...
We are planning to write an automated tool that scans the header and
then based on the values we found we can assign the right extension.
