MS Office - UNIX Compatible?

Hello!
Is there a version of Microsoft Office that is
compatible, officially or not, with UNIX? I have read in
a couple of places that MS Office v. X is compatible, but
I can't find enough documentation on this to make me feel
secure in buying and installing it on my UNIX system.
Please, can someone verify, one way or another?
