MS Office XP Prof. 2002, unable to access/open.

I've been trying to open Excel or any of Office files and I get a pop-up that
says,
"Window's installer Service could not be accessed. This can occur if you are
running in safe mode, or if the Windows Installer is not correctly installed.

I have tried for hours to correct this problem but have not been successful,
maybe someone out there can help me figure this out.

I know you said you've "tried for hours" to fix this, but without knowing
what you tried during those hours, it's pretty hard to offer suggestions and
not just retread ground you've already covered.
