I understand the Tools-Options-View TAB-Un-check "Show summary tasks."
There was a work-around with the Project-Sort-By-Check Keep Outline
structure that accomplished this desired view on a permanent basis, obviating
the need for repeatedly doing first option.

Hi The Weather is Nice,

I am not sure I completely understand your question, but you can create a
task filter similar to the Using Resource... filter to accomplish what I
*think* you are looking for.

Create the new filter (Project Filter For > More filters....New)
First line
Field Name: Resource Names
Test: contains
Value(s): "Select resource name from list"?

Second Line
And/Or: And
Field Name: Summary
Test: equals
Value(s): no

Uncheck Show related summary rows.

Hope this helps. Let us know how you get along.

Hi Sunny,

Welcome to this Microsoft Project newsgroup :)

I would record a new macro to de-select the summaries and another to put
them back. hen I's create 2 new buttons to put on a toolbar from whence you
can achieve what you want by the click of the appropriate button. For
details on how to do this, please have a look at my series on Microsoft
Project in the TechTrax ezine, particularly #16 - Macros, at this site:
http://tinyurl.com/2xbhc or this:

(Perhaps you'd care to rate the article before leaving the site, :)
Thanks.)

FAQs, companion products and other useful Project information can be seen at

Hope this helps - please let us know how you get on :)

Hi JulieS,
Thank you for taking the time to write. This is not a time-sensitive
*problem* so it will take me time to analyze the suggestions that you and
Mike Glenn have offered. I am very appreciative of your time.

Having the opportunity to use more words, I will try to describe my
experience. We use the summary tasks view sometimes. Just as often, we use
the *Using Resource* filter. It used to be the case, in an old file that
we've been replicating for years, that we could use that *UR* filter and the
summary tasks wouldn't show-up. Is this clear? So, when the *All Tasks*
filter is in use, the summary tasks are visible and when using the "Using
Resource* filter, the summary tasks disappear.

All this was achieved while the "Show Summary Tasks" box was checked (in the
Tools-Options-View TAB.) I think we had achieved this utility through the
*back-door* somehow jury-rigging the Sort-By feature. (See the pull-down
menu of Project-Sort-and we check both boxes, Permanently re-number and Keep
Outline Structure.)

Recently, I decided to create a new file from scratch as the one we've been
replicating was getting large in size. I was successful in creating
everything we do, with a file one-tenth of the size, but I can't figure how
we achieved our former *back-door* trick. It's the back-door trick that I'm
after. Is this clear as mud?

I suppose a simple alternative would be to somehow decrease the size of MS
Project files; but they seem to save changes. Thanks for listening.

Hi The Weather is Nice,

You are welcome for the assistance so far and thanks for the feedback.

Well, you've stumped me with the further explanation. [Not too hard to do
:) ] Your explanation is clear, I just can't fathom how sorting the
project file would accomplish what I believe you are looking for which is a
filtered lists of tasks showing just a specific resource but without any
summary tasks showing.

I do panic mildly when someone suggests renumbering the task IDs (the
permanently renumber option). In testing, removing the check from the "keep
outline structure" had no effect on the display of summary tasks. The only
thing I can come up with is the field sorted by was forcing the summary
tasks to sort to the bottom of the sorted list and, in a large project file,
they were out of view.

Do let us know if the custom filter option I suggested or if Mike's
suggestion for a quick macro to turn summary tasks off and on works to your
liking, if not, we'll try again.

Julie
PS: I just have to ask -- exactly *where* is the weather nice?

Hi Mike,
As you may know from my finally getting to the TechTrax website yesterday,
this is the course of action on which we've decided. Just a little more
background on what led me to come to this forum. Following are the details
that may (or may not) pertain to our former functionality.

As one moves between the Task Sheet (TS) view and the GANTT Chart (GC) view
the Tools-Options-View ___Show Summary Tasks (SST) box shows some
peculiarities. If one selects SST in the TS view, this box will not be
checked if one switches to the GC view. However, if one starts at the GC
view and checks SST, it will carry-over to the TS view. Similarly, if both
views have the SST box checked, and one un-checks it in the GC view, this
will not carry over to the TS view.

In contrast, the Project-Sort-Sort by (PSS) ___Keep Outline Structure (KOS)
shows stability as one moves between different views. However, at some point
in the past, I think we created some situation with the KOS box in
conjunction with the SST view selection above, that achieved the
functionality that served our scheduling needs the best. Unfortunately, I
cannot replicate how this was achieved.

But your toolbar icon solution provided us with additional functionality as
I threw in a sort by start in the macro. This is what we need as we tell
people where to go in our environment. It's better than the past, I think.

Julie - I tried your solution first but we didn't get the drop-down menu
(probably could with VBS but as alluded, the one-click icon will work nicely
here.)

Thank you both for the effort - I really really appreciated it. Until next
time...
Sunny in New England.
