Error message when trying to open an MS Project 2002 file

Cannot open the file, check that the file name and path
are correct, check that the file format is recognized by
Project. Microsoft Project files saved in a version
earlier than 98 can't be opened.

There are these sympotoms in an article in the knowledge
base, however none of the scenarios apply. The file was
created with MS Project 2002, fairly recently within a
couple of weeks, no macros or VB scripts were used. Can
create other documents save and re-open. Does the "fix"
apply for this as well!!? Help! Anyone else with this
situation with Project!? I have many users using this
version and no problems thus far.

Hi Gillian,

Welcome to this Microsoft Project newsgroup :)

I haven't got an answer. Was the file originally created in Project 98 and
saved into Project 2002? Can the same file be opened in other PCs? Is it
the only project giving trouble? Try to narrow it down to the file being at
fault or the PC. If the latter, try re-installing Project. If the former,
try saving the file to database and then re-opening and saving - this
sometimes clears corruption. Have you got a backup you can use?

Hope this helps - please let us know how you get on:)

Hi Glenn,
Thanks for the reply. The file was originally created in
Project 2002. The file cannot be opened on other PC's,
same symptoms. I did a fresh install on my PC of project,
no luck! I really think its the file itself. According
to the user, no VB scripts were used or macros. A very
simple, small Project document. It seems to be the only
project giving problems, was able to create new ones on
PC. Can you please provide more specific information
regarding clearing file corruption. Other option is to
restore from previous tape backups from server.... would
like to determine the cause however....

Thanks!

There is no specific information regarding clearing file corruption if you
cannot open it. You could try opening a new project and inserting this
project. If it works, you could try the suggestions in FAQ Item: 43. File
Bloat? - Might be Corruption. Otherwise it's resorting to the backup. If I
knew why files get corrupt I'd make a fortune!

We have seen similar problems. The cause seemed to be a
corrupt file with "nonexistent" bogous macro which was
there and not there at the same time. Creating a new file
and copy the schedule from the old solved the problem
