MS Project Capabilities and Project Management

After all this time, why is MS Project the single overall
tool that does it all far as Project Management? Why does
it not do all or even support all of project management
functions?

Integration - Little - No change control

Scope - Some - Listing products and cativities

Quality - Little - May list QC results but not plan

Human Resources - Little - May list resources but not
undelying plans

Commo - Little - Does not determine who speaks to who

Risk - Little - Does not determine risk or control measures

Procurement - Little - Does not do procurement strategy or
tactics

Because Project Management software is a misnomer. In the early days of
Project, the manuals defined Project Management as the scheduling of
projects. They didn't even know about the rest. Project, and it's
brethren like P3, Workbench, etc, are scheduling software. There is no
PM software that does it all at this time.

You don't expect MS Word to write and edit your novel for you, do you, or
out-of-the-box Excel to set up your chart of accounts and financials? You
are asking software to replace the intelligence, experience, and expertise
of a Project Manager. No software does that, whether we're talking about
project managment or word processing. Far too many organizations expect a
secretary with MS Project to be able to replace an experienced project
manager with triple the salary. It ain't gonna happen.

Z,

It was not intended to do those sorts of things. In my opinion Excel is a
far better tool for most of these :)
