MS Project changes from Open to Read Only

I found a post from December 2008 which seems to be having the same problem
as we encounter. There was no answer on this post - so hoping things may have
been addressed?
Using MS Project 2007 - all project plans are stored and accessed on a
shared server.
I cannot quantify exactly how and when it happens.
Initially I thought that it was my Master Plan causing problems as linked
into all other individual projects. If one of our PM's has a project open it
seems to change to Read Only if I open the Master Plan. I do not get a
warning message to say locked by another user like I would if I opened the
individual project. Generally the project changes to Read Only on the
individual project when this occurs, meaning they have to do a save as - and
then I have to correct Master Plan with name changes etc.
Last week though one of my PM's though had this problem several times and I
was not in the office and hence the Master Plan was not interfering. He does
not just update the plan and save - he constantely multi-tasks - meaning when
he returns to the project - some time later - it changes to read-only.
Hoping that there is an answer ?
Cheers Andy

Two possibilities:
1) A poor network with drop outs can cause problems, especially with linked
projects.

2) Linking projects is risky: rename, over-write or move a linked project
(or the master) and you roll the dice. Sooner or later (when not if) a file
corruption will occur.

Safest scenario is to delete all links, discard any and all master files and
resource pools and make sure individual projects are OK. If not update to
SP2 then save as xml file format then re-open from xml.
