MS Project Crashes On Save After Project Import

Andy Novak

I have run into a bug that I hope there is a fix for. I have one
project that I wish to plug into another larger project and assign
dependencies across the entire "big picture". But, I want to isolate
the smaller one until it is setup the way we want it.

If I setup dependencies in the smaller one first, the only way the
predecessor and successor info can be "relative" is for me to insert
the smaller one into the larger one. The predecessors and successors
are renumbered so that everything is correct. I don't want to link
the smaller project to the larger one, just pull in the data.

But, project professional 2002 crashes if I attempt to save. If I
create mpp files of both first and do the same thing, there are
duplicate task ID numbers. If I copy and paste, the predecessor and
successors are not relative and those are wrong.

It appears that the only real options are to copy and paste (but then
lose the relative numbering of the predessors and successors) or copy
and paste the smaller one in prior to setting the links across both
plans.

Is there a patch or fix for this? Or is there something I haven't
tried?

Thanks,

Publish both projects to the server. Open both projects
in MS Project Pro. Use external links to create the
links you want. The help file in MS Project is excellent
on this and very easy to use. We have had no problems
doing it this way.
