MS Publisher mail merge - slow paging

I did a mail merge with Publisher because I have some varible images
(signatures). The resulting Pub is about 500 pages. When I try paging thru
the final pub, it takes about 30 seconds to go from page to page.

I'm running Publisher 2004 on a Win XP Pro pentium 4 machine with 512Mb Ram.
Lots of free disk space, etc...

MS Pub is pegged at about 50% cpu.

Could it be the tiff images on each page? Is there a way to merge them as
links instead of embedded images?

If I keep the page count down to batches of 50 or less, things are more
bareable.
