MS PWA Actuals & Remaining Work / Reporting

Using MS Project Server 2003 we require team members to report actuals
(hrs worked) per day AND remaining work (hrs) left for the task. Is
there anyway to do so? I only see 3 options for forcing managers to
comply and that is not an option.

Also we require team members to report to a manager who will then
approve/reject updates then get updated in the plan. Overall project
manager (1 person) will review and republish then print variance
reports against baseline values. Any advice on how to configure? Any
advice on how to hide columns from PWA to restrict team members what
they see?

Thanks

When you elect to use the Hours of Work Done Per Day or Per Week methology
for tracking progress, the system requires that team members will enter
Actual Work hours in the timesheet portion of the View My Tasks page. The
system also allows for team members to adjust the Remaining Work in the task
sheet portion of the page, but does not require this. Adjusting the
Remaining Work is how a team member can show a potential late finish or an
actual early finish for the task (by adjusting Rem. Work to 0 hours). To
implement this methodology, we recommend the following as a "best practice"
to our clients:

1. Resources should record their actual hours worked on each task on a
daily basis and save the changes at the end of the day
2. At the end of each reporting period (preferably on a weekly basis), team
members should adjust the Actual Work for each task as needed
3. If team members adjust the Remaining Work value for a task, they should
also insert a task Note to document the reason for the adjustment
4. Team members should update their project manager at the end of the
reporting period

As you can see from the information above, the key to using this tracking
method is to establish this as a project management methodology. You should
make this a training and performance issue with all project managers and
team members, and then hold them accountable for using this methology. If
you want people to adjust the Remaining Work, you will need to teach them
how to do it and why they should do it.

Concerning project variance, there is one task View and three task Tables
that are helpful. They are the Tracking Gantt view, along with the Work,
Cost, and Variance tables. Each of them shows variances that are relevant
to the project. Hope this helps.
