thaks for your help. I tried your suggestion. Although the tip /a etc worked,
re-naming etc didn't help. The Word startup directory in windows/applicata
data etc seems to be empty - I have show all files etc enabled. I maight
stick to myLotus Wordpro - it's better than Word - better dictionary, better
columns, better behaved etc etc ... just that .lwp files are not as
transportable as .docs ....

If starting Word in Safe Mode works correctly, then it has to be something
external to Word. Make sure that you only have the one normal.dot on your
computer: search in Explorer and rename all you find to normal.bad. Also
check the printer driver isn't corrupt by deleting and reinstalling it.

Thanks for the e-mail. I renamed *normal.dot (there were 2 - 1 called $-etc
to normal.bad) and then uninstalled then re-installed my printer but got the
same old error ....

Diagnosing remotely is very tricky but there just has to be a third party
add-in that if affecting Word. I can only suggest going through the article
again ensuring that every step is followed: this usually finds the problem.

I did what you suggested and used REGedit to delete the suggested key. Hey
presto! Word now shuts down properly. (It did so for a few weeks after I
intsalled it). Many thanks for your interest
