MS Word 2002: Large File Size

David B. clark

I have an empty MS Word Document that is 500 KB. I've
deleted everything in the document and the size will not
decrease. What could be causing this and how do I
elliminate the problem?

I tried all of these suggestions but none of these options worked. My 130 page document size has bloated from 2M to 94M.

There are a number of reasons for excessive file size, including:

1. Fast Saves: Disable this at on the Save tab of Tools | Options.

2. Preview Picture: Clear the check box on the Summary tab of File |
Properties.

3. Versions (File | Versions): Make sure "Automatically save version on
close" is not turned on.

4. Revisions (Tools | Track Changes):
Highlight Changes: Make sure "Highlight changes on screen" is turned on.
Accept/Reject Changes: If "Accept All" or "Reject All" is available then
revisions are present; accept or reject all changes, then turn Track Changes
off.

5. Embedded True Type fonts (Tools | Options | Save); embedding fonts should
be avoided wherever possible.

6. Embedded graphics: When feasible, it is preferable to link the graphics.

7. Document corruption: See
http://www.mvps.org/word/FAQs/AppErrors/CorruptDoc.htm.

Are you sure that you have saved this is Word Format and not RTF?

I don't really know what the s/w designers store in the bloat apart from document profiles text and format data but I did an interesting discovery - using freeware OpenOffice
In OpenOffice 1.1 I opened my 3+ Mb Word 2002 doc with 5 images for training [and I suspect Word kept all images as bitmap - typically a crude uncompressed stream ]
In OpenOffice, I took out the images via cut&paste onto a graphics program, converted /stored it to a JPEG file and then imported it back to exactly the same document. Saved the file as both .DOC [Word2000] and also as an .SXW file of OpenOffice.
The file was trimmed to a size of just over 400Kb and the Word doc created by it only slightly larger. This is approx. over 6 x reduction in size !!

So now I will convert any document with images from old DOC types via OpenOffice
