MS Word 2003 & Copy & Bookmarks OLE_LINK#

H

Harry Sampson

Hi,

Here's my situation: Whenever I copy in MS Word, I get bookmarks
automatically placed in my document. The copied stuff is bookmarked.

Some Key Information:

1) There is more than one user ID or Logon. Only I suffer the problem.
Other user is fine.

2) WinXP - Normal, MS Word: Safe - Still have problems

3) WinXP - Safe, MS Word Normal and Safe - No problems.

4) Cindy Meister wrote in an e-mail to me the following:

############
OK this is what has come back [from Microsoft]:

--
Since Windows SAFE mode works, then the general troubleshooting would start
there. There is a lot of info in our many "troubleshooting Word..."
articles. Some ideas would be:

- problem with a printer driver
- problem with the registry
- problem with something that is running at Windows startup (check
MSConfig)
- repair the Windows install

Since Word's safe mode doesn't fix things, we know it is most likely
NOT:
- corrupt Word program files
- Word addins
- Corrupt Word settings (normal and data key)

I'm sorry there is no magic answer here - is seems unique to this machine
from what I can gather, so the troubleshooting needs to start there.
--

From here, I suggest you go to the word.application.errors newsgroup if you
need help following the steps in the trouble-shooting articles mentioned
above (for example
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;236423). The experts
in this group can help walk you through finding out what's loading in
Windows that might be interfering with how Word is working so that you can
solve the problem without resorting to the radical step of a reformat and
reinstall.

##############

When Cindy was helping me, we did not know that (1) that the other user
remained unaffected.

Before I throw my hands in the air and reformat the hard drive, are there
any steps I should do to further investigate or troubleshoot this problem? I
am not well versed in dealing with any registry issues. I have no clue or
at least not sufficient clue to deal with MS Config. I have not tried the
Repair Windows Install (not too sure what to do there).

I look forward to your answer.

You're not using any compatibility options in Windows XP?

Hi Terry,

To the best of my knowledge, no. But is there something I can check to be
sure? I know that I have no deliberately set up any compatibility stuff
with Windows XP.

I cannot think of any further to add over and above Cindy's suggestion. The
symptoms really point to either a corrupt normal.dot or registry, but you
say that starting Word in Safe Mode doesn't resolve the problem: so that
leaves me baffled too.

Hi Terry,

I will try deleting the *.dot file. If that doesn't fix it, reformat here I
come.

Thank you for your help!

Don't delete it - just rename it as normal.old. (Then you can use Organiser
to copy across any customisations that are saved in it.)

Charles,

They are bookmarks with the form OLE_LINK# where the pound sign is the link
number.

Add-ins?
Yes, PDFMaker and Snag-it. However, the problem still occurs when I open
MS Word in safe mode. When I do that, the add-ins are not loaded. So I know
the add-ins are not the root cause.

Hi Terry,

My Normal.dot is very plain with no extra stuff. So if I start from
scratch, nothing is lost. However, you raise a valid concern for those who
are following along with a similar issue.

It appears that deleting Normal.dot had no benefit. So I guess I will have
to reformat the hard drive and start over.

I don't know how it could be an Add-In if it still occurs in safe mode. I
take it you mean you are using the Run dialog to start word with the /a
switch when you say Safe Mode. Still, it sounds like something that is being
caused by an Add-In. Perhaps an Add-In or tweak to Windows. Try running
Spybot Search and Destroy to check for spyware.

Since the other user on the computer is not affected, you may want to simply
create a new user and transfer your documents to that user. Note, I did not
say copy your files and settings, just your documents. That would seem a lot
less drastic than reformatting your hard drive.

Hi Charles,

Word was opened in safe mode, so add-ins are not the root cause.

PC has no viruses, never has. Norton AV.

Spyware. It has regularly scanned with Spybot, Adaware, and Spy Sweeper
monitors consistently.

Your suggestion is simply creating a new user is tempting. But I dislike
having something that is causing grief. So a clean PC might be the best
solution.

Corrupt profiles are not uncommon and very difficult to diagnose the cause.
Try deleting your profile and creating a new one as that may be all it is.

Hi Terry,

That's interesting.

I know how to create a new profile. That is very easy. In terms of
deleting the current profile, how do I accomplish that?

I found this link that describes removing profiles:
http://windows.about.com/library/tips/bltip607.htm

I understand that I will have to move my "My Documents" stuff over. I will
also have to copy my Outlook data files. Is there anything else that I
should be aware of?

I appreciate your continuing to monitor this thread and providing advice.

Hi,

The problem appears to be solved. Tonight I removed Blinkx, which is a
desktop search engine. Problem disappeared. I have installed Yahoo!'s
desktop search engine instead.

I might have had a poor install with Blinkx or something. So I am not
blaming Blinkx. I simply know that once it was removed, my problem with MS
Word dissappeared.

Thank you everyone for helping.
