MS Word 2003 Crashes - Won't run

When I start MS Word 2003, the application runs for a period of about 30 seconds and then crashes. I have installed all updates, and it does the same thing. I un-installed Office 2003, rebooted, re-installed Office 2003, rebooted, re-installed all Office updates, and rebooted again. Word still will not run. From what I can tell, Word is the only MS application that is being effected. Excel works, Power Point works

I noticed a posting related to Word 2000 where Raghu Prakash recommended starting Word with the Start - Run - Winword.exe /a command. This method yields the same results, Word crashes within 30 seconds

What can you recommend

Hi Aaron,

I am glad that you have been reading my posting, since you have already
tried other other options. The problem could occur because of NORTON
Anti-virus. If you are running Norton AntiVirus (NAV), or Norton
SystemWorks, which incorporates NAV, there may be a conflict between the
so-called Norton AntiVirus plug-in for Microsoft Office and another third
party add-in that you have installed. It is actually a very good idea to
disable the NAV plug-in for Office in any case, as it confers no real
benefit and it slows Word down.
Turning on and turning off the Norton AntiVirus plug-in for Microsoft

ALso please let me know...if you have network printer driver
installed...That would also be causing problem to office 2003.

Thank You...
Raghu...

I have McAfee Internet Security Suite rather than Norton. I have looked through the documentation on McAfee, and cannot find a plug-in for MS Office. So, I don't think a plug-in is my problem.

I do however have a networked printer. I have read some of the postings about networked printers, and seen information about installing the printer driver locally. However, there have not been any specific details with respect to this procedure. When I installed the printer software on this machine, I installed it from the CD that came with the printer. I thought installing the software in this manner would have loaded the driver locally. I guess I was wrong

So, I un-installed the printer software. Then, I physically hooked the network printer to this machine and re-installed the printer software. Now, MS Word works properly. Then, I hooked the network printer up to its proper machine. I re-installed the connection to the network printer, and things seem to be working properly. Both MS Word and MS Wordpad open, stay open, and don't crash. I can open, close, save and print Word files

Thanks for your help. My issue is completely resolved

I'm having the same problem with Word 2003 crashing and I've tried all the
suggestions that I've found here and everything I could think of on my own,
including deleting all the temp files and verifying that there's nothing
wrong with the disk to which it writes. I'm running AVG Antivirus from
Grisoft, but that hasn't changed and Word only started crashing a couple of
weeks ago. I had a networked printer installed, that I deleted, but word
still crashes within 20-30 seconds.

Any other suggestions?
