MS Word 2003 looses critical documents even after applying KB83000

I am running MS XP operating system and MS word 2003 becomes unresponsive when typing in a document. Task manager confirms word is unresponsive.
Document changes are lost permanently, requiring retype.

I have applied KB83000 but Word still hangs.

One post here said to check disk space. I have 3.6GB free on C: and 8GB free on D:
Have 1GB RAM, 1.5GB total page file size allocated for virtual memory.
My questions are:
1) How much space do I need for Word to not crash?
2) Does MS word 2002 have the same problem? I have tried reverting back to it, however it complains "There are no character files installed. Please run MS office Assistance in maintenance mode to install one". Help provided nothing useful on "character file". What is Character file and will running 2002 word solve my problem?

I'd say your resources are not the issue. There are a number of
possibilities, since it occurs when you are typing, but the primary
causes could be a corrupt AutoCorrect file or perhaps a macro.

First rule out your AutoCorrect file. Go to Tools/AutoCorrect options
and turn off "Replace as you type" and see if the error continues to
occur. If so then start Word in Safe mode, hold Ctrl while starting
Word, in order to rule out customizations and macros.
