MS Word 2003 - Lost Macros HELP!

M

Mark Broom

I have a user that had about 20-30 macros setup in word 2003 and for some
reason they are all gone. Does anyone know where these could have gone? Where
they are originally stored? I have searched high and low with no results on
any of them. The problem is that she doesn't remember what half of them are
because she has been using them for 5-6 years.

Thanks,

Not that she is aware of.. but that doesn't mean that she didn't. Is that
where the macros are stored??

Yes that is where the list usually is and how she gets to them however they
are all gone from the list. After further review and the normal.dot file it
was just modified on Monday which was the day that she lost them all so I am
guessing that is possibly the problem. Thank you very much for your time but
I have a feeling they are gone.

Thanks again Bob,
Mark

Humm, 5-6 years an not a single backup? I'd look around. Or perhaps a
"normal.old" or "normal.bak"?

If she stored them in the default location then that would be Normal.dot.
Did you search for this file? If not, use Windows Search and find
Normal.dot. More than likely there will be more than one copy, one with her
macros, and the other without them.

If that's what you find, then the most likely cause is pointing the User
Templates file location to another folder. (This can be found in
Tools/Options/File Locations). Word looks for Normal.dot in the User
Templates location, then it searches a few other folders. If the file isn't
found then a new one is created, which would explain the missing macros.

To correct the issue, either replace the Normal.dot file in her current User
Templates folder or point the User Templates location back to the where it
was before. If you use the latter method, you should deleted the newly
created Normal.dot or it could cause confusion down the road.

If you can't find another Normal.dot, then did she make any changes? I know
if you modify your Language settings it could result replacing Normal.dot
with a new one. But you're warned before this occurs.
