MS Word 2003 SP1 - Bullet and Numerbing causes Word to Freeze

M

Manoj

Hi,

Install MS Office 2003 Arbic Language Pack. All text and numbers are in
Arabic. And the “Numeral†in “Complex and scripts†is set to “Context†in
order to show Arabic numbers.

What I am trying to do is formatting the numbering of the document.
For example, on a Arabic enabled doucment I tried the below
- Right click, choose “Bullets and Numberingâ€
- Choose the “Outline numbered†tab
- Go to “customizeâ€
- In “Number format†I change the first number manually to 9 (in Arabic)
- Choose the option more
- And choose “Apply changes to†to be “this point forwardâ€, then press ok
- The changes will be applied to the whole document so I have to press undo
ONCE to keep the format only for this section
- Now, again right click, “bullets and numberingâ€, then choose the option
“restart numberingâ€, then ok
- Again you have to press undo ONCE to apply the changes only for this section
- When I do that, the MS office freezes, and need to be restarted.
- And asked me if I want to send the error report
- I sent the report once and they informed me that there are updates
available to solve this problem

I have tried a few patches like but none really help solve the issue. Word
freezes and seizes to work. Can you tell me a speicific patch which will help
resolve the issue.

Hi Manoj:

This is not really anything to do with Arabic or complex scripts. This is a
bit of a limitation of the Word numbering mechanism.

You should always have the latest service pack installed, and for Word 2003
that's SP2. But it's not going to solve this issue.

The problem is that you are using "UNDO" to leave numbering in a
partially-applied state.

First, apply a style to the text you want to have numbering.

Then use Format>Styles and Formatting to customise the style you choose to
your desired formatting (but do NOT change the "Start at" number).

Now, right-click the first number in your list and set the Start-at number
there.

This will produce numbering that does not cause documents to crash.

Hope this helps
