I'm looking for a way to compare 2 versions (the original and the changed
version) of the same document and send an email containing the
difference(s).
Is there some standard mehtod to doing that, maybe a tool, this would
preferably run on a webserver so it would be great if Ms-Word needn't be
installed

I usually create a PDF for each Word doc, then compare the PDF using
Acrobat.

Howard,

I want this do be done in an automated proces. Someone downloads a document
from the website, makes changes. uploads it back to the website. When
uploaded the server should pick up the document and compare it to the
previous version, create a 'diff' file and send that 'diff' file via e-mail.
I think your solution is not workable...
I was thinking, since it would only be about text-changes, to find a tool to
convert the doc files to txt, let a commandline diff program compare 'm and
create a file with the differences between 'm, then send this file via
e-mail.

You *may* be able to do this with UltraEdit. This is a programmable text
editor http://www.ultraedit.com/ that will compare any two files. Whether it
will do what you want you will have to evaluate for yourself. There is a
trial.

It's easy 'nuf to save a word doc as text, and compare the text.
Word itself can do this, you do not need any special program.

Then you can create a "diff" file any way you choose and send the file via
email.
You can do this on the Client side using A Word macro, or a stand-alone
program that invokes Word.

Howard,

It's supposed to work like this in an unattended mode, so a user downloads a
doc, then changes it, then uploads it. After upload to the website an
automated process should compare the documents and mail the diff.
I'm afraid your solution requires user intervention during processing of the
uploaded document and that's not possible in this scenario.
thanks for your reply

All of this can be programmed.
