MS Word displaying graphics as a red X in a black box

I am receiving MS Word files from Windows users. When I open them I
often see a red X in a black box filling the position where a graphic
should be. I am not sure of the graphic formats, but it has come up
frequently, and is impairing my work. What can I do to see the
graphics and resolve this issue?

I am using MS Office X on a Tiger OS.

Thanks for your help

Possibilities :

- This occurs in Powerpoint, OS 9._ when it runs out of memory.
Solution was to increase memory size.

- This happens with Word on a PC when trying to display a Quick Time
picture when Quick Time is not installed. In general, an OS cannot
display a picture that it has not software for. Possible solutions are
find out the picture format and install drivers, etc. needed to display
the picture, or convert the picture in the original file to a format
recognized by Mac - eg., .giff, .jpeg, or .pdf.
