MS word document ruler and format paragraph box

I have windows 98 second edition on my computer and
recently installed office xp proffesional version. When I
create a new document my ruler looks funny (almost like it
is in cm or mm) and also when I go into format paragraph
at lines and spacing tab it shows ch (instead of inches)
and under spacing before and after it shows lines instead
of PTs. I went to tools and options and inches is chosen
there. Does anyone know what the problem is. Thanks
