MS Word Error Msg - Compile Error in Hidden Module: FileNew

Manj

I am using Windows XP Pro and have loaded Office XP Pro.
Whenever I click on the the "New Blank Document" icon in
Word I get the following error - "Compile error in hidden
module: FileNew".

This prevents me from launching a new blank document
within a current document. My only option is to launch
Word separately if I want another blank document which is
very frustrating.

I have re-installed Office XP, and added service Packs 1
& 2, but the problem remains.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Cheers.

Hi manj,

I suspect the cause is one of the following

1. a virus
2. a rogue add-in
3. The fact that you have upgraded Office from an earlier version, and there
was a macro in normal.dot.

#3 is the simplest to fix. Close Word, find the normal.dot file, and rename
it to badnormal.dot (or to anything other than normal.dot), and then restart
Word.

If the problem goes away and stays away, then that was it.

If the problem doesn't go away, then #2 is the most likely cause, and you
need to take a look at folders on your system named Startup, and see if any
templates exist there. If they do, close Word, move them, and then restart
Word.

In any case, if you don't already have it, you should get and install a good
anti-virus program and use it regularly.
