ms word is generating strange 'char' styles

Dear computer masters,

I am at sea. My 2002 Office Word for PC is generating strange styles,
which I think is causing Word to freeze. The only styles I created and
use are 8 heading styles, a normal text, a quote text and a quote
within quote text. (I like to keep things simple.) I know that when
one adds a bold or italics or underline to any of these styles, or a
new text size or font, Word generates a new style. But this is
something completely different.
I don't know how to make these strange styles go away. And I don't
know why Word is generating them. I went to Google and several
Word/Office tech sites and asked my question, but found no matches. Am
I uniquely cursed?
Does anyone out there understand this? Because I certainly don't and
don't know what to do.
Sincerely perplexed,
Troy

PS. I tried to attach a screen shot. But I guess Google doesn't allow
it.

Thank you Tony Jollans.

The MS fix does not work retroactively. It cannot clean up the
formatting mess it made. But it's great to know what the problem was
(is).
I've installed the free Open Office. It's good, but it needs to
create an 'Outline View' (whicn it calls 'Navigation') as good as
Word's.
Once again, Tony, thank you very much. It's good to know
there's people out there like you who understand these
machines/programs and are willing to help those who don't.
Sincerely,
Troy
