MS Word (Mac version) insists on Saving everything as templates?

A

AES/newspost

For some reason my copy of MS Word seems determined that Save or Save As
should save all documents as templates, with a ".dot" suffix, and no
options or settings I've been able to find seem to change this.

What do I need to do?

Hi AES,

Are you saying that when you open a blank new document (from File>New Blank
Document or Cmd>N or by clicking on the new document icon) and save it, it
saves as a .dot?

I wonder if your Save/Save As>Format pane is stuck. Open a blank new
document and do a Save. In the Save dialog box, in the Format pane/box,
what does it say? Does it say Microsoft Word 2001 or, perhaps, Document
Template. If the latter, change to the former and see if the new setting
sticks when you open another new document and do a Save.

If this isn't the problem, then do a test of your Normal template: Close
Word, navigate to your Normal template (Applications> Microsoft Office 2001>
Templates) and drag it to the desktop. When you reopen Word, a new Normal
will be created. If this fixes the problem, you can trash the original
Normal (and empty the Trash) or, if you have customizations you don't want
to lose, copy them over using Organizer. Post back if you don't know how to
do this.

Other possibilities: Are you opening the new document from the Project
Gallery? If so, what does it say in the "Create" pane?

Are you double-clicking on a template to try to open a new blank document?
If so, that would certainly explain it. Double-clicking on a template
always results in another template. To create a new document based on a
template, you have to open the Project Gallery, make sure it says "Document"
in the "Create" pane (which it should by default) and then you can
double-click to make a new document.

If none of these scenarios fits what's happening, then please post back with
more details. Hope this helps.
