MS Word searches disk drive when opening some files

Every time I open certain Word documents -- generally those that I know I
transferred from a diskette originally -- Word persists in searching the a:
drive even though the file has long since been saved on the hard drive. Even
if I click on the document directly from a folder in my hard drive, the
computer runs the a: drive, presumably looking for the document.
So how can I stop this from happening?
