MS Works 7,0

I could not find category for MS Works, so I hope my post
here will get a response. We are senior citizens and
having a bit of a problem...
Pre-loaded on the notebook was MS Works 7. One of the
programs within MS Works is "Addresses." Whenever I add an
address and then exit the program, I notice there is
an 'icon' added to the desktop, with the name "~"; and
when this "~" is clicked, nothing happens. If I delete
that icone (it has no picture or image on it) and add
another address to the MS Works "Addresses" section, the
image/logo appears again on the desktop. This image does
not appear on the desktop when doing any other tasks
in "Addresses" or in any of the other programs within MS
Works. How do we stop this 'icon' from appearing on
desktop everytime we add an address?
Thank you for any help.

How do we get to: "microsoft.public.works.win."? We are
senior citizens and not too familiar with these sites.
Thank you. Please advise.
