mscomct2.ocx error and date time functions

I just received a new computer because my old hard drive crashed. When I go
to open reports, I got an error message saying that the reference to
mscomct2.ocx was missing. I downloaded the appropriate file and placed it in
the system32 directory, but when I run a report, the date and time functions
on the bottom of the report are not recognized.
If I go to insert the date and time on the report using Insert>Date and
Time, the functions are placed on the report, but do not work.
I understand that ActiveX controls do not ship with Access.
Should I change my Date and Time stamps to Now() instead? Or am I missing
something on the install of the Active X Control?
Thanks,
Kevin

Your References collection could be messed up.

References problems can be caused by differences in either the location or
file version of certain files between the machine where the application was
developed, and where it's being run (or the file missing completely from the
target machine). Such differences are common when new software is installed.

On the machine(s) where it's not working, open any code module (or open the
Debug Window, using Ctrl-G, provided you haven't selected the "keep debug
window on top" option). Select Tools | References from the menu bar. Examine
all of the selected references.

If any of the selected references have "MISSING:" in front of them, unselect
them, and back out of the dialog. If you really need the reference(s) you
just unselected (you can tell by doing a Compile All Modules), go back in
and reselect them.

If none have "MISSING:", select an additional reference at random, back out
of the dialog, then go back in and unselect the reference you just added. If
that doesn't solve the problem, try to unselect as many of the selected
references as you can (Access may not let you unselect them all), back out
of the dialog, then go back in and reselect the references you just
unselected. (NOTE: write down what the references are before you delete
them, because they'll be in a different order when you go back in)

Just putting it in the system32 directory is not enough. You then need to
register the OCX. Open a command prompt and change to the system32 directory
(cd \winnt\system32 *or* cd \windows\system32 depending on your system).
Then type in the following:

regsvr32 mscomct2.ocx

You should get a dialog box saying "DllRegisterServer succeeded". Assuming
you don't have any other missing references, you should now be able to use
your Access app. Otherwise, follow the instructions given by Doug Steele in
this thread.

Can you replace the references to mscomct2.ocx with API calls?

How do you get rid of troublesome ActiveX Controls/references?
