mscomm32.ocx

Suddenly this activex control has stopped working. Don't know if it has
anything to do with a recent windows update. The control on my form is now
white and when i try to add it in again I get "Loan system doesn't support
this ActiveX control". This is crazy as it's worked for a year just fine.

Douglas,

So... you're (Microsoft) saying that after this patch is installed, any
Access Application using mscomm32.ocx will no longer work? It sounds
like, if Ford discovered one of the wheels on your car could maybe wobble,
so they remove everyone's wheels.

How are you using the control? There may be better ways of achieving the
same results.

This particular control, I don't think is in use right now, (the application
is huge, it could be out there in some remote section on one of my clients)
but I certainly use others that I wouldn't like to be turned off willy-nilly
by MS.

I just thought it rather abrupt.

Thanks Doug, I've removed that particular update and it looks like my
application is working now. Issues remain such as security vulnerabilities?
andn further patches that rely on this one and the fact that there was no
warning from Microsoft of this.

I use this control to control the serial port to communicate to a handheld
PC. Are there other ways of doing this?

Hundred of people must be affected by this. This is a key system for me and
I can't believe what they've done.

Thanks very much by the way for your help - don't know what I'd have done
otherwise.

Douglas,
We use this control to communicate our program with the Pole display and PIN
pad device through the Com port in our POS module. Please share with me what
other better way to achieve that. Thanks

It'll be under Add/Remove Programs and click on the MS UPdates flag.
You'll need to identify the specific update though.

Alternatively you can locate the latest version of the mscom32.ocx and
use it instead.

However by far the best option is to remove the OCX and use API code.
Other newsgroup posters have stated the VB code at the first link on
the below page works.

See the Serial Port Communications page at my web site.

For the lurkers I've created a blog entry on this topic.

An older version of MSCOMM32.OCX has had the "kill bit" flag set.
