Is MSDE a viable alternative to SQL Server for small installations that do
not care about Project Portfolio Analysis and Modeling features? This seems
to be much cheaper than purchasing SQL Server and licenses (for a small
company).
Gary, Other than the virtual nightmare of setting up MDSE, I find it
works admirably. (it was like having baby, if men could conceive, and I
did it before we purchased SQL Server [the big boy] which I am told
comes with a real installation app). But it is free and quite functional.
There is also a free interface to it at

I use MSDE exclusively as a laptop to desktop link, in that I keep the
projects on my laptop and access them from my desktop while at work.
It was a godsend. I work on projects at home when I have a fluid
moment, and then I have the work already to go when I arrive at work.
I also use the big boy, SQL Server at work and save as when I want to
share a project with my network administrator or other staff member who
is privileged to use Project 2003. We are looking at Project server.
The only complaint I have is the lack of knowledge of how to make the
links automated so that I don't have to open each project going through
the cumbersome open OBDC interface each time - especially if I am using
a master project in which I have the Tree fully spread. I am sure there
must be a better way to do this, but I have not been able to make
vbscripting work to do this.
