My computer crashed, and now that it's up and running (I
had to reformat HD, could not back up programs. Trying to
reinstall Office 2000 Upgrade, but is not recoginzed.
Currently have MS Works installed (came with computer)but
that doesn't help. What to do next?

You can only install the Office upgrade over a previous version of Office.

MS Works is a qualifying product but Office 2000 can only recognize versions
of Works that are older than Office 2000. You'll need to contact MS for a
replacement CD key if you don't have one of the qualifiers from this list
that existed when Office 2000 was released in 1999:
