MSOFFICE 2003 Problem I blew the subject - sorry -

My friend is having the following problem with MS Office 2003, and
asked me to post news group queries about it in the hope that someone
can offer some light.

Anyone?

His problem description is as follows:

I think I may have found the problem I am having with Office 2003.
Since I don't use it that much, I didn't associate it with what I
think it is. I think when I installed my 300 Gig HD and used the
software to move over my system and all of it's files, something got
lost or mis-placed. Below is the gist of the trouble report I put it
to Western Digital tonight:

I used the DATA LIFEGUARD TOOLS to setup my new HD and to also
transfer the existing operating system and all the files from my old
80 gig HD to the new 330 gig HD. Everything appeared to have
transferred fine, until I tried using any of the Office 2003
applications. Whenever I select an Office application I get a Windows
installer message box with a message that it is preparing to install,
then another message box appears saying "An error occurred and this
file is no longer functioning properly. Please run Setup and select
Repair to restore the application". At this point most applications
will continue to open, but by this time I have waited at least 3
minutes to open it. Furthermore, if I try doing what they suggested,
it won't recognize any of the Office programs. If I try to uninstall
Office 2003, it won't let me.

Tonight, I booted up from the old HD and MS Office worked just fine.
It appears to me that something got messed up in the transfer of data
from the old HD to the new HD, whether it be something in the registry
or a file on the HD.

I'm hoping you may have come across this problem before and can offer
some suggestions.

Thanks

Jethro

So have you repaired the installation?
And if so what exact err msg is given.
Does your sys boot with *only* the new hd fitted and not the old hd?

Only two possibilities come to mind:

1. You moved links to your Office software (e.g. icons from your desktop)
without actually moving the programs; or

2. Microsoft may require you to reinstall the programs and go through a
verification process to insure the original Office programs are not being
circulated to multiple users. When I purchased a new computer and attempted
to install Microsoft Office off of the original CD-ROMs, it detected the
license had already been used to install Office on my original computer. At
the end of the installation process, I received a pop-up message. It
required a unique authorizatioin code I was to obtain by phoning a specific
number at Microsoft. I was asked identifying information to insure I was the
same person who had purchased the software, then given the code to put in the
pop-up message screen. This went smoothly.

I'm not a tech person, but I would assume the second option is a good
possibility otherwise after you complete the original installation, the
software could be transferred to multiple computers, with no authentication.

I suggest you try reinstalling from the original CD-ROMs.
