Can anyone tell me the difference between the MS Office Professional full
version retail and the full version Academic?

I hve 2003 Professioanl but I need to install a database on some PC swith
office 2007. Is it worth it to upgrade or am I asking for problems?

The primary difference between the retail and academic versions is price,
although I believe there may also be some legal limitations around what you
may do with the product. (Read the End-User License Agreement to be sure).

The actual programs are identical though.

I believe that the Academic version includes ONLY Word, Excel, and Outlook.
The professional version includes Access, PowerPoint, and possibly more.

If you upgrade to A2007, you can use Access to create your database
application and use the Access runtime (which is free with a2007) to run it
on PCs that do not have Access installed.

Maybe it's changed, Pat, but I have an Academic version of Office 97
Developer Edition sitting on the shelf above me. (Yes, it was hard to find,
but it was on their website)

Are you perhaps thinking of the Student and Teacher edition? That's a
totally different animal (which, I believe, does only contain the products
you mention).

Thanks Doug, I guess I don't understand the difference between "academic"
and "student and teacher". Perhaps "student and teacher" is a cheap way
for the public to purchase parts of Office whereas "academic" actually
requires that you be a student or teacher? In any event, it looks like the
line up has completely changed for 2007.

MS seems to have wiped all references to earlier versions so I couldn't find
a similar page for A2003. I guess you have to buy older versions on the
black market.

There may actually be academic versions available but you would need access
to a campus bookstore to find out about them.
