MSP 07 pro visual reports

R

Robert

For some reason each time I try to generate a visual (excel) report from a
master project of about a dozen resource loaded projects, MSP "crashes" a
wants to send a report to microsoft.

This does not happen on when generating a visual report on any of the
individual projects.

Any suggestions are appreciated.

Hi Robert,

What service pack is installed to Project 2007? What version of
Excel (including service pack) are you using?

I don't know personally of any known crash issues, however due to
problems with the global unique IDs being duplicated if the projects
are based upon a template or a copy of one another, I have had
almost no success creating meaningful reports on a consolidated
project.

Perhaps if you gave us a bit more details we could be more helpful
and possibly try to reproduce the error you report.

What report are you trying to run?
Does the master project pull from a resource pool or does each
project have its own resources?

I hope this helps. Let us know how you get along.

Thanks Julie. My apologies for the slow reply.

Some additional info:

Using MSP 2007 Pro, SP2, desktop only. Also using Excel 2007 SP1.

It doesn't matter which visual report I attempt to run from the master
project, MSP closes and wants to send a notification.

The master project is set to "use own resources" rather than using the
resource pool, even though I may have the resource pool file open. It also
crashes if the master is set to "use resource pool".

I also get a crash from when attempting to run a report on the master
project, if the resource pool file is closed.

Basically, I can't run a visual, excel report on a master project in any
configuration that I am aware of which doesn't seem correct to me. I have
yet to find anything that says "you can't run visual reports on master
projects". But am beginning to wonder if this is the case.

As previously stated I can run any visual report on any individual project.

Appreciate your help.

[Julie] Not to worry. We're all busy.

[Julie] Okay, so I am now guessing that you're master project has
tasks in it other than those from the inserted projects? I am also
guessing that you did not create the master project through opening
the resource pool and chosing the option "Open the resource pool
read-write and all other sharer files into a new master
project....." As I noted earlier, I've had problems with the
validity of the data coming from a consolidated project, but no
problems with crashing.
I also get a crash from when attempting to run a report on the

[Julie] I don't think you'll read ... "you can't..... but several
have noted that due to a duplication of global unique indentifiers
(GUIDs) in projects made from the same template, I don't find the
data to be accurate. If your projects are not from the same
template, or are not created based upon one another through File >
Save As, you might be okay. I'm afraid I don't have any "guaranteed
to work" suggestions. If they are not necessary, remove any tasks
from the master project file. No need to share the resource pool
with the master file, if there are no assignments. Try creating the
master through the process of opening the pool file and creating the
master through that option.

Now I'm really going nuts. Today I am able to generate reports from the
master schedule without a crash.

Of course now my next challenge is to get some meaningful data in these
reports. As you mentioned, duplicate ids are troubling and i'm getting
resource assignment hours 2-5 times greater than reality.

The struggle continues.........

Hello Robert,

Glad to know the master schedule has started to participate.

Regarding the inflated assignment hours, double check the resource
pool for extra sharer files. Open the pool file and choose, Tools >
Resource Sharing > Share resources. Scan the resulting dialog to
make sure there aren't copies of extra files attached. That is a
fairly common issue when people do a "save as" of a project file and
neglect to disconnect one copy.

Thanks for the help Julie.

The latest master was generated from the resource pool which may have
allowed me to start running reports. Late friday I spent some time cleaning
up unneeded resources etc. I am going to make sure I have no unnecessary
files attached to the pool and generate a new master from the pool. Then
we'll see what happens.

Good luck Robert. I think creating the master from the pool is the
way to go. Let us know if other issues arise.
