msproject 2003 - 2007 save errors

our mill recently began using MSProject 2007. templates created in 2003,
when saved, will not open and give an error message of too many columns or
some such. (will get text and paste) "the operation cannot be completed
because the source file contains invalid project data or the total number of
rows would exceed the limit of 1,048,000 rows in a project. validate the
data in the source file, insert fewer rows, delete some rows, or consider
dividing your project into subprojects to provide more space for tasks and
resources."

also, it will not recognize the previous password. but, if save as a 2003
version, it will work properly.

how can we use previous files as templates and save in version 2007, without
creating error messages??

more - when one saves the 2003 version file, without the previous password,
as a 2007 version file, then exits, re-opens file and resaves with previous
password, there is not a problem?!!!

but, the work done on the 2003-2007 with password is toast, cannot be
reopened, and work is lost, seemingly. agh!

Hello Jerry,

There were a number of problems with password protected files in the
non service packed version of Project 2007.

As a first step -- please confirm you have Project 2007 Service Pack
2 installed. If you still have Project 2003 available to your
users, also please ensure you have Service Pack 3 installed to
Project 2003.

I hope this helps. Let us know how you get along.

thanks for the reply JulieS.

my properties box reads -

[Microsoft (R) Office Project 2007 (12.0.4518.1014) MSO (12.0.6320.5000)

(c) Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved.

This product is licensted to ...]

under the System Information button I can see the following:

OS Name Microsoft Windows XP Professional
Version 5.1.2600 Service Pack 2 Build 2600
and ...

* SO, It seems we are geared up with all the software?

and, if someone saves an old 2003 file (with password) as a 2007, is it lost
forever, as far as being able to open it?! THIS IS THE MAIN QUESTION.

HELP?!

Jerry,

It does not appear that you have Service pack 2 installed to Project
nor SP-3 installed to XP. I strongly suggest running Office and
Windows Update and get caught up.

There were a number of very significant issues with Project 2007
pre-SP-1 including what you report about password protected files
being damaged beyond repair.
