MSWord not responding

I cannot open any MSWord files that have been compressed; compression happens
automatically with system maintenance and disk cleanup. I just receive the
message " msword not responding. Thanks

Hi Carla,

What version of MS Word and how are you opening the files? (i.e. through File=>Open, or ???

If you start Word, create a new file save it, close word, open Word then use File=>Open for the same file does it open?

I am running Office student and teacher 2003 edition. Based on your
suggestion, I just opened a new document, then went to open=>then double
clicked the file name and it worked. Tried several and they all worked! I
had previously just kept trying from the folders, not from an open document.
An easy solution which I wouldn't have thought of! Thanks so much. Now can
you tell me why the computer won't shut down? : )
