Multiple Column Sorting

D

DaffyD®

I've been reading online about sorting multiple columns and I'm confused.
Selecting one column to sort also selects all the other columns as well, at
least in Excel 2000 and XP. I didn't see any difference in selecting one
column or using the "Then by" boxes, in fact, the "Then by" choices didn't
work. If the first column sorted in ascending order, and I chose to sort the
second and third columns to sort in descending order, Excel still sorted all
three columns in ascending order.
If Excel sorts the all the columns together by default, why use the "Then
by" boxes at all?

Guess what Rob

Not everyone looks in every NG -- and btw there are at least a dozen Excel ng
(if you dont bother to count the foreign language groups)

First, I think Rob posted for the rest of us--not the original poster. So Rob:
thanks for letting us know that the question has been answered in a different
thread.

And if the OP thought that they needed to post to multiple newsgroups, he/she
could have crossposted (included all the groups in one message) instead of
multiposting (separate messages to each group).

Fine for Rob to post for anyone or everyone -- What thread or newsgroup was
it answered in?
Perhaps there are some of us that might be interested in the answer.

(ie Answered in excel.formulas or excel.newusers)

Lady Layla;
I seemed to cause you some stress, and I apologize for that.

I assumed that stating that it was;
"Answered in the Excel ng." was sufficient(?) - but obviously not.

How would you have me reference it so that I don't ever again cause such
a degree of consternation?

Rob,

I, for one, didn't know that microsoft.public.excel existed
until I happened upon this thread. As Debra pointed out,
maybe there are others that don't either.
(assumed the "Microsoft.public" was a given).
Actually, I thought that "microsoft.public.excel" was the given
which is why I couldn't find the other thread in the ng's that
I frequent (.misc, .newusers, .programming & .worksheetfunctions)
If I *ever* do this again
I've done it and more than just a few times. I know others have
too. It does help to know that it's posted in multiple ng's so we
don't waste our time answering a post that's already been
replied to in another ng.
(<Sigh>, live and learn)
Yepper. And I learned that I needed to add another group to my
portfolio. Thanks.

LadyLayla,
Not everyone looks in every NG
Quite true, but I believe that most of the regulars frequent the
major 3 (misc, prog & functions) as a rule.

I think that the point here is that *if* a user wants to post to
multiple groups, they should "crosspost" as opposed to
"multipost". At least that way when someone answers it in
whatever group, the replies will, in most cases, show up
in all the groups it was crossposted to.

Just my 2 cents,
John

It was the

not

or .excel.worksheet.functions.

By the way........
That particular newsgroup isn't tracked in Google
as far as I can tell.
