multiple flags

Hi,

I am evaluating OneNote, and to work for me I need to be able to have
multiple sorting options on the note flags. You can 'put' multiple flags next
to an item, but I cannot seem to get multiple level sorts to work. Similar to
the person that wanted a poroject like "vacation" and then sub-projects like
"get maps" all sorted by using multi-level note flags or tagging.

Any suggestions how to easily implement this. Seems like prety simply
outlining, list-making but I am stuck on how to implement it in OneNote.

Further example:

Project flag = Vacation
Task Flag = get map (but I also want it to be flagged as a sub under Vacation.

Thank in advance,

You can't automatically create a nested/outlined flag hierarchy like
you're talking about, but there are a few workarounds:

1) Your last example implies you're applying a levelof specificity to
flag definitions that may not be useful (i.e. a flag named "Get Map"
doesn't seem at first glance to be something you would repeat often).
Keeping a general high-level task "Vacation" or "Vacation Planning
Tasks" might better capture what you're trying to do with the flags and
possibly eliminate the need for a nested hierarchy.

2) You can create a Notes Flags Summary (Renamed to Tags Summary in
ON2007) where you can manually drag and drop, indent, and otherwise
reorganize your fl/tagged notes to create a hierarchy. This would be
helpful if you wanted a one-time printout of your tasks. The downside of
this is that the NFS/TS page creates duplicates of the tagged notes, and
marking a task complete in the NFS/TS page does not complete the original
tagged/flagged note.

I'd recommend the first workaround. Feel free to ask some follow-up
questions here if you need some help renaming and organizing your Tags.

There is no way to do what you want using flags or tags. The tag is
either there or it is not. You can have more than one tag but there is no
way to control the order in which they appear because to OneNote, it does
not matter. When you do a summary it just lists all the paragraphs that
have the first tag in the list. Then it lists all the paragraphs that
have the next tag in the list. Etc. It also lists tags that you put on a
paragraph but have since modified the tag in the tag list. It treats each
of these as different. If there are paragraphs with more than one tag
then those paragraphs get listed once for each tag.

You are much better off just using OneNote's hierarchical outline format
for the text itself. It almost seems as if you are trying to make the
tags be hierarchical instead of the paragraphs themselves. As for the
tags you use, Eric is right. You would be better off just typing "Get
Maps" in your outline and putting a standard check box tag next to it. If
you really do have to get maps for lots of different projects on lots of
different pages and you want to be able to generate a summary of all the
different places you need to get maps for then it might make sense to use
a special tag. I use one in my class notes to tell me that I need to make
a flash card for that particular paragraph.
