multiple footnotes in document

I need to write a rather customized document that will contain three layer
footnotes.
To explain it better, here is what a sample text would look like:

(beginning of page)
.....
In the same page 1) of the document I need a) to use three types *) of
footnotes.
.....

___________________________________________
1) this is the first layer of footnotes
___________
a) this would be the second layer
___________
*) and this is the third category of footnotes
(end of page)

I looked at footnote options and field options in MS Word but I can't find
any way how to do this in Word. Any ideas?

thanks in advance,
ALBAN

There is certainly no built-in way to do what you want in Word. I have
learned never to say something is impossible, but I think it would be very
difficult to achieve this effect in Word.

You can get two layers--an autonumbered layer and a custom mark layer. You
could fake this effect by making all the letter series and the asterisk
series custom marks (and letting Word use AutoNumber for the numbered ones),
but you will have to set the order yourself and they won't re-order as you
edit if you move the B text to before the A text.

If it's a short doc with not many letter/asterisk notes and all you need to
do is print it, this might be feasible, especially if you can get away with
adding the custom mark series after you are doing editing.

Obviously, you can let Word autonumber whichever series you prefer--it will
autonumber the a,b,c, but then you will have to manually do the 1,2,3 and
asterisks as custom marks.
