Multiple Instances of Word

I work in an environment where a document management system is used (Docs
Open) and when selecting the MS Word icon from the Docs Open Applications
screen more than once several instances of Word launch. Has anyone seen this
and know what to do to rectify the problem as this messes with the Normal.dot
and other tempates. This also happens when selecting the MS Word icon in the
Task Bar. Thanks.

If this is Word 2000 or above, it is normal to have a separate window and
Taskbar button for each document. See

Thank you for your reponse. In my case it is opening Word twice. There are
two process of Winword.exe appearing in the processes list. Also when
closing out of all documents and then finally Word, I receive messages that
the normal.dot and global templates have been changed and am prompted to save
them. If Word is open w/o an active document and I double click and launch
again, should it not just maximize from the Task Bar rather than opening
again? In this case when I click on the Word icon, the splash screen appears
and Word is launched again. Is this supposed to happen with Word 2003.
