Multiple master projects, with the same subproject

Hi,
Can you please elaborate on the pro and con of such method?
are there any technical problems?

In Project Server 2003, you can create master projects and safely save them
in the Project Server database, but you should NEVER publish a master
project. In Project Server 2007, you can safely save and publish master
projects. In either situation, you can create multiple master projects that
reference the same subproject(s). Be aware, however, that if you open a
master project that includes a subproject managed by another PM, the
subproject is checked out to you while you have the master project open,
unless you create the master project using Read-Only subprojects. Hope this
helps.

The default permissions in Project Server 2003 do not allow you to publish a
master project. Furthermore, you should NOT publish a master project.
Can't you open the individual project that is a subproject and publish it?
Let us know.

Thanks for the prompt reply Dale.

My appologies, I forgot to mention we are using PWA 2007 and Project Pro.
2007. In your post above (and others I've seen) this shouldn't be a problem
with 2007. Is this correct?

Chris --

In Project Server 2007, you can safely save and publish master projects.
However, I still recommend that you publish each individual project first,
and then you can publish the master project if you wish. Publishing a
master project allows someone like an executive to click the name of the
master project in the Project Center page and then see a Project Details
view of the master project, including seeing all tasks in each subproject.
Hope this helps.

Understood. Thanks Dale.

Lastly, do you have an idea on why I am receiving the error message I listed
above? It's not letting us insert a subproject that has already been
inserted to another master. Should this be happening in 2007?

I will plead ignorance on this one. Project Server 2007 still has so many
issues that I can't even begin to imagine why you have this problem. Have
you applied SP1 yet? If not, you should really do this as soon as possible.

An inserted project can only exist in one published master project.
In turn that master project can be inserted in another published
master project.. This hierarchy is particularly noticable in Data
Analysis views (project list) which helps explain this approach. You
can insert projects into multiple unpublished masters. The warning
message will display when you do this.

Thanks Mike. That helps to make sense. I'll spend some time this week
experimenting with this. I'll get back to you with status or any other
problems that come up. Again, thanks for the response Mike.
