multiple resources assigned to a single task

Hello,
I have 3 resources that I have assigned to a task. The task Work is 60 days
and so 20 days Duration is applied to each resource. The problem I have is
when I level the resources, Project still requires that each resource works
20 days on the task. I would prefer that if one of the 3 resources was too
busy that the other two resources covers for the busy one. This would mean
that the two resources do all or atleast a majority of the work. Is there a
way to have Project automatically assign the work to the free resources and
call the task complete? I believe the current setup is causing artificially
long project times. Thanks!

I have always assigned one resource per task. This is much more accurate to
calculate an end date.
MS Projects will split task if you feel the need to assign more than one
task. Type split task in the help box.
Good luck.

Hi,

Sorry, No, Leveling never changes assignment work nor Units.

That is most unfortunate. The split task scenario results in the same
outcome. Is there some work around for this? Perhaps there is a method I
could contrive that would give the same effect even though it does not follow
the intent of Project's use? I find it hard to believe that I am the only
one with this issue, especially with the amount of group work that occurs.

Thanks for the advice!

Hi,

Well, out of the box I don't think there's anything available.
I can easily imagine a VBA procedure (Macro if you like) performing such
calculations (providing you exactly define the rules) but again I don't know
of anything available, sorry

Thanks for the info. You saved me a lot of additional time trying to figure
this out.
