Multiple resources assigned to one task - entering remaining work

I have a situation where I have 2 resources assigned to one task. They both
enter their actuals, and I ask that they each enter the work they have
remaining individually for that task. I expect that when I accept their
updates, Project will assign the remaining work to each resource individually
(ie. what each of them entered). What appears to be happening is that we can
not enter remaining work at a resource level. The remaining work that a
resource enters goes at the task level, and overwrites any remaining work
that another resource entered - it does not add to it. This is a big problem
for us. Is this how it is supposed to work or have we configured something
improperly? Thanks.

It's difficult to conjure up what you're seeing without an example that
includes starting values, what the resources entered and what happened and
when in the correct sequence. There may be a logical explanation.

I had a task with 2 assignments: resource 1 and resource 2. The task is set
to Fixed Work. The work value was 20 hours, and each resource had 10 hours
of work allocated. Resource 1 submitted his timesheet, and completed 7
hours, and set his remaining work to 0, as he had completed his portion of
the task. When the task change was accepted, the remaining work on that task
was set to 0. So we had 7 hours of actuals, and 0 remaining work. I would
have expected the remaining work to stay at 10 hours, to account for the work
assigned to the 2nd resource.

Thanks.

Your expectation is correct, so I'm trying to figure out whether there was a
sequences of actions that caused this. Had the second resource submitted any
time? Were there unsubmitted hours in the second resource's timesheet? When
the manager updated and published new and changed, what shows in the second
resource's timesheet?
