multiple web problem

M

MJ

I have created 2 completely separate websites using
FP2002. It seems the 2nd web has taken priority over the
first and made the first a subweb??? I cannot even log on
to the host server to publish updates to the first web or
manage anything else on the server pertaining to that
web. I am only able to manage the 2nd web.

How do I separate them and work them individually? Is
this a host server problem or a file save location
problem?? I'm desperate!

Thanks in advance-you have all been helpfull when I've
been here previously.

Are these, in fact, two completely separate Web sites, as
in two completely separate virtual servers?

Or is this a case where:
o One DNS name points to the root of a virtual server,
and,
o The other DNS point to a folder inside the same virtual
server as the first? (Some people call this a
"subdomain" which is a very confusing and unfortunate
term).

If the latter, then you should never open the second
(aka "subdomain", aka "fake") web site directly in
FrontPage. Open the true virtual server's root Web, and
then open the subweb where the "fake" server starts.

Jim, thanks for the quick response.

These are 2 completely separate websites. They were
developed for 2 different organizations who have nothing
to do with each other. I have 2 separate accounts with
the same hosting company.

I can open each website in FP and edit and do whatever I
want. I cannot publish the 1st site as it won't let me
log into the host server - my logon is invalid even when
I point it to "http://website1.com".

Yes, they are showing as separate webs-one does not open
the other when I click on the icon.

Ok, a couple of things to try with FP shut down.

1. Do a file search and search for files named *.web
and delete all found.
2. Delete any references to either web from "My network places."

Then open FrontPage and see what happens. If still no luck,
the next step is editing the registry and clearing
"Recent Publish List" located at:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\FrontPage\Explorer\FrontPage
Explorer\Recent Publish List

Do NOT remove the value named Default

When publishing are you using File Menu | Publish Web and entering the
correct destination URL?

Steve,

Thanks - I've deleted the web files and the My Network
Places references. Still won't recognize my logon.

This is going to be long. I hesitate to go into the
registry for now as now think this might be the problem:
1. Created site #1 with FP98 (not yet published)
2. Purchased & installed FP2002(full version)
3. Was able to open and work on site but when I did file
save as it defaulted to a new folder C:/My Documents/My
Webs/site#1. Published to site#1 URL on host server
using "http:". Not a problem have been working from that
location since.
4. Uninstalled FP98 once I knew I could work on site #1
with FP2002.
5. Created site#2 saved it in C:/My Documents/My
Webs/site#2 & published to site#2 new URL on host server
using "http:"
6. Viewed site#2 and no FP components were there or
working though they worked in "preview" and "Preview in
Browser IE6.0".
7. Stumped - I stupidly(now it comes together) published
site#2 to "C:/Frontpage Webs/Content/". It did get all
the FP components working.
8. Now there are 2 webs in the "C:/FP Webs/Content"
folder.

Is that what's overriding everthing? Is this easily
fixed? I do have backups of both sites published to
C:/Documents and Settings/Administrator/Administrator's
Documents".

Sorry to be so long-winded.

Despite this statement, then:

It seems the 2nd web has taken priority over
the first and made the first a subweb.

I take it that when you open the 2nd web, the first Web *doesn't*
show up within some subfolder. In fact, the content for the first
Web is completely inaccessible.

In that case, this seems like a simple case of:
o Your account no longer being valid on the first Web, or
o The FrontPage Server Extensions being removed from the first Web.

In either case, you need to contact your administrator or host, and
report a problem that you can't log in.

Aha, been there done that upgraded
from 98 to 2002. My webs are also located in
C:\FrontPage Webs\content

Try this:
FrontPage > File > Open web...
click More pages on the right panel.
Browse to C:\FrontPage webs\content
You should see the Web Icons for site#1 and site#2
If the site#2 folder doesn't display as a web icon.
right click and select convert to Web.
then open, then publish to the proper location.

You may have to import any updated files from
C:\my documents\my webs to C:\FrontPage Webs\content.

Also if you want to, there's a tweak that will change your FP2002
default webs folder to any location you want:
http://www.95isalive.com/fixes/index.htm
bottom of the page.

Thanks, I'm beginning to think that also-though they just
hit my credit card for this month.

I've tried everything Steve Easton has suggested except
modifying the registry and still no luck. I'm going to
call my hosting company.

Thanks, I'll let you know what happens.

Steve,

Problem finally solved. After all the work you advised -
it turns out my logon was corrupted on the server end.
Been reset and all is fine. The work was not in vain-
cleaned up a lot of garbage.

Thanks and check them out if you like.
