Music File won't play through Automatic Slide Transition

C

Chantzie

I need a music file to play through my slideshow, while the slides automatically advance. I've inserted an MP3 file on my 1st slide, and set it to stop after 999 slides (I have 50). The file plays continuously through my slideshow when I click through, but if I run it on automatic transition (set to advance after a few seconds), the 1st slide does not advance until the entire music file (3 minutes) has played itself through, and then advances -- without music, of course, for the rest of the slideshow

I need to make this work for a special project to be used by our marketing team here -- would greatly appreciate any help. Thank you

Hello,

It sounds like the "Continue slide show" setting did not get set. You might
have to trick PowerPoint into setting this since it's not available through
new Custom Anmation task pane or effect settings dialogs. Try the following:

1) Tools -> Options
2) In the "Edit" tab, select "New animation effects" in the "Disable new
features" group and click "OK"
3) Select the icon for the inserted sound file on the slide it begins on
4) Slide Show -> Custom Animation (this should bring up the old animation
settings dialog)
5) In the "Multimedia settings" tab make sure that the "Continue slide
show" option is selected and click "OK"
6) Run the slide show.

I am having the same problem. Please let me know if you
find an answer!

As you can see in the posting just above yours, I got my answer. And it works. Only problem is that no matter how I set the timing, the music won't begin to play until the 1st slide is flipping to the 2nd (but I can live with that -- have actually posted a message in another thread ("music throughout the presentation" p. 7 or 8) regarding that problem).

Another problem is that after changing my settings according to Mr. Langhans' instructions, I seem to have lost my "speed" setting -- meaning that I can't control the intervals at which my animated items do their thing. I just noticed that late yesterday and will message Langhans again on this thread regarding that problem.

Hello and thank you, again. I responded to you on the other thread ("music throughout the presentation" -- p. 7 or 8?) and mentioned a small problem I'm having getting my music file to play as soon as the slideshow begins. Even if I set the start time to 0 seconds, the music won't start playing until my 1st slide is flipping to the 2nd. But, worst case, I can find a way to get around that

Another problem I noticed, though, was that with my new Custom Animation settings, I'm missing the feature that controls the intervals at which animated objects perform their actions. I'd like to be able to bring down a line of text at a time and set the number of seconds before the next line appears. I don't see any such setting in my new dialog box. Is there any way to access the old dialog box too? Or am I not noticing something

Thanks.

Regarding the animation timing and the text entry options: You are missing
something that is pretty easy to miss. Right click on the animation and
select options. You will get a three tabbed window. Enter line by line
options are on the text animations tab, timing options are on the timing
one. Play around and post back if you have more questions....

If you are using PPT 2002 or 2003, you need to right click the animation
itself (in the Custom Animation task pane) to find the options. If you are
using the earlier versions, the tab should be in the regular Custom
Animation dialog.

Hi. I tried right clicking on the text box I've animated and I don't see
an "Options" selection. Only the following choices: "Cut, Copy, Paste,
Save as Picture, Edit Text, Font, Bullets and Numbering, Grouping, Order,
Set AutoShape Defaults, Custom Animation, Action Settings, Format
Placeholder, Hyperlink." Then I tried right clicking on the object from
within the Custom Animation dialog box and all I got was a "What's this?"
pop-up.

Thank you. It turns out I did have the timing tab, only I was expecting to be able to animate each paragraph in a text box separately. I seem to remember I was able to do this previously by highlighting the paragraph and selecting an effect, timing, etc. The way it is now, though, the only way I'd be able to accomplish this is by creating a separate text box for each paragraph (a formatting nightmare!)

I need to control each paragraph separately so that I can have the 1st par. pop up 1 second after the slide appears, then allow sufficient time for reading before having the next one pop up -- I'll want to customize the intervals according to paragraph length

Can this be done without using a separate text box for each paragraph?

Kathy J

You are right, you can't set up the timing on text box paragraphs
individually. But - You should be able to do what you want by putting the
text in the placeholder instead. Here's how:

Change the layout of your slide to one of the layouts that has bullets. Move
your text from the text box to the placeholder. Now, set up the entrance
animation on the placeholder. When it shows on the custom animation pane,
you will see only one entry, with a blue bar underneath. (The bar has a
double arrow pointing down.) Click the bar and the single animation element
will expand into one animation for each bullet. Right click the first
animation and set up its options. Then, right click and set up the next. Do
this for each paragraph.

One hint that helps see when things are happening: Right click any of the
animations and select "Show Advanced Timeline". This will let you see when
things are happening in relation to the rest of the slide content.

Okay.. that person had you turn off the new features of PPT. I am not sure
why they had you do it, since you can make music play through multiple
slides in any version of PPT.

With the newer features turned off, you won't be able to make the text box
content come in paragraph by paragraph. I suggest that you turn the new
features back on. Then, go read this PPT FAQ entry to learn how to make your
music play through the full presentation:

Play sounds across multiple slides (A WAV runs through it)

Thank you. Problem is I'm not seeing any blue bar or double arrow --
probably because I'm in a different version. The version is 2002, but
another Microsoft rep recently had me change the settings (in order to allow
my music to continue throughout my presentation), so that I now have a
dialogue box instead of a pane along the right side of the PPT window. The
tabs and layout are completely different. Here's what it looks like:
It's a horizontal box with the slide objects listed in the upper left,
then a miniature picture of the slide to the right of that, and then OK,
Cancel & Preview all the way to the right. The bottom half of the box has 4
tabs: Order & Timing, Effects, Chart Effects and Multimedia Settings.

Chantzie, I have checked John's reply and he offered a way to set the
"continue slide show" setting. Once you've done that you can re-enable the
PowerPoint 2002 features. His work around is simply to get to the dialog to
make the setting. So, re-enable the functions, try Kathy's suggestions,
test the presentation and let us know if everything works the way you want,
including the music files.
