Hi. I'm not getting anything when I select a sound ("Arrow") from the Slide Transition window & run the slide show. My visual transition effect works fine, but no sound. (No, the volume isn't turned down!) I have to get this presentation done next week -- someone please help. Thank you

Just to clarify -- my objective is to play music throughout the presentation, not the arrow sound at the transitions. I was just testing and once I get it to work, will find a music "wav" file to use.

One way to do this is; from the first slide go to insert > music from file >
locate the .wav file you want and tell it to play automatically. Then if you
don't want the speaker icon to appear in your presentation, just place it
off to the side of the page.
You'll have to make sure the wav file music is as long or longer than your
presentation, if you don't want it to cut off.

Try this instead. On the first slide, go to Insert > Movies and Sounds >
Sound from File and locate your WAV file and click OK. When asked if you
want it to play automatically, click on Yes. Then right click on the sound
icon, select Custom Animation from the drop down menu. Then it depends on
the version of PowerPoint that you are using. In PowerPoint 2002 and 2003
you click on the sound object in the Task Pane and select the Effect tab.
Se it to Stop Playing after 999 slides.

Thank you for your reply. I haven't had the chance to try this again until today. With regard to playing a .wav file, I'm unable to get any of them to play (even when I just click on "play" on the Slide Transition menu). I was able to get an MP3 file to play, but was unable to get it to play continously through the slideshow when it was set to AUTOMATICALLY ADVANCE from slide to slide. Which is why I thought I'd try inserting the sound through the Slide Transition feature (as Sonia suggested to someone), but then I couldn't get any .wav sound to play (and .wav sounds are the only kind the Transition feature seems to accept), which is why I posted my initial message

So with regard to making sure the file is long enough to last through the whole presentation, I have the opposite problem. When the slideshow is running automatically, the entire song plays out in the first slide (where the file is) before advancing to the next slide (without music). When I click through the slideshow, however, the song plays continuously throughout. Problem is this presentation must be self-running for our purposes

If you have any more ideas, please let me know. Thanks

Please double check your settings. If you set it to play for 999 slides and
the first slide is set to transition automatically after XX seconds or
minutes, the sound will continue to play. If it still doesn't work, create
a test presentation with just three blank slides with titles of 1, 2, and 3.
Insert the sound file on slide 1 and set it to stop after 999. Set the
slides to transition automatically after 5 seconds. Does that work? If
so, then we'll have to look closely at what else is going on in the "real"
presentation.

Thank you very much for your reply -- I haven't had the chance to test
this out until today. Unfortunately, it doesn't solve my specific problem,
which I realized I failed to mention on my last posting. The reason I
wanted to try the Slide Transition method (described in the URL you posted)
is because I thought it might eliminate that problem. Here's the problem.
My slideshow needs to self-run, which means I'm setting it up for
AUTOMATIC slide transition (after a certain number of seconds). If I click
through the slide show, the music plays just fine -- starts at the beginning
& continues smoothly as I click through. The problem is that when I run it
on automatic transition, the 1st slide -- which has an MP3 music file in
it -- waits until the entire song plays itself out and then advances to the
next slide -- and the music is stopped, of course.
I've tried setting it to stop after 999 slides (as you suggested), but
that doesn't work either. Any suggestions? I'd be grateful for any help I
can get. I've been asked to do a special project for use in marketing our
firm, and am under some pressure to produce something that works. Thank you
again, in advance.

Hello,

It sounds like the "Continue slide show" setting did not get set. You might
have to trick PowerPoint into setting this since it's not available through
new Custom Anmation task pane or effect settings dialogs. Try the following:

1) Tools -> Options
2) In the "Edit" tab, select "New animation effects" in the "Disable new
features" group and click "OK"
3) Select the icon for the inserted sound file on the slide it begins on
4) Slide Show -> Custom Animation (this should bring up the old animation
settings dialog)
5) In the "Multimedia settings" tab make sure that the "Continue slide
show" option is selected and click "OK"
6) Run the slide show.

Thank you. This sounds promising -- will try it first chance I get and let you know.

It worked! Thank you very much for your help -- you've taken a load off my mind.

Just one minor glitch that I can work around if I have to: I set the music file to start playing 0 seconds after the previous event, and the slides to automatically advance every 3 seconds. On the 1st slide only (where the music file is actually inserted), the music doesn't begin to play until just before the slide advances. So after starting the slideshow, you get almost 3 seconds of silence, then music & the 2nd slide almost simultaneously. But the rest of the slides work fine

Thank you again.
